Of course, this is the culmination of Smith and partner, Helen Townsend’s, song cycle charting their falling into, out of and back in love again and, as affirmations of the heart go, ‘Every Single Day’ is about as loved up as you can get.
What? Another silly love song? Why, yes! Because, there’s always room for just one more, if they’re good, if they’re true and if they’re about all of us, our hopes and our dreams. If they have all that, as ‘Every Single Day’ does, then bring it on!

Shannon Smith's "Valentine’s Day" is not just a song; it's a journey through the perilous yet ultimately redeeming path of love. Against the backdrop of a houseboat in Augusta, Smith penned a confessional ode to his partner, Helen Townsend, weaving a tapestry of regret, truth, and undying affection.

The single, infused with the Americana spirit, blooms with the gospel-tinged harmonies of the McCrary Sisters, whose accolades include backing for the "Elvis" movie soundtrack and Grammy nods, lending a rich, soulful layer to the track. The song's narrative arc—a lover's plea for forgiveness—is universal, yet Smith's raw delivery roots it deeply in personal soil.

The musical arrangement, a delicate interplay of Baby Grand Piano, Hammond organ, and the mournful wail of the pedal steel guitar, creates a soundscape that is sparse yet expansive, mirroring the vast emotional landscape Smith traverses. As the song builds, so does the intensity of Smith's plea, culminating in a climax that is as cathartic as it is heartfelt.

What sets "Valentine’s Day" apart is its authenticity. In an era where music often feels manufactured, Smith delivers a piece that is painstakingly crafted and emotionally charged. It's a ballad for those who have faced the darkness in love and dared to light a candle rather than curse the night.

As Valentine's Day approaches, Smith's single stands as a reminder that even the most fractured love can be whole again. And as the McCrary Sisters' voices rise like a gospel choir behind him, one can't help but feel that this song doesn't just aim for the charts—it aims for the heart.

Following the success of his debut single, "Dance The Night Away," which claimed the #1 spot on the Australian AIR charts, Shannon Smith unveils his poignant sophomore release, "I'm Gonna Change."

"I'm Gonna Change" takes listeners on a musical journey that diverges sharply from Smith's earlier upbeat hit. This track delves into the raw emotions of a man grappling with the fear of losing love. Smith's introspective lyrics, "I am tryin' / I am dyin' / In myself / When I’ve done wrong," lay bare the complexities of personal redemption and the desperate promises of reform made to salvage a relationship.

Steeped in the rich tradition of Western Australian folk-rock, the song draws parallels to the evocative soundscapes of Cruel Guards-era The Panics and echoes the spirit of The Waifs during their London endeavours. The song seamlessly shifts Smith's focus, demonstrating a surefooted evolution in his musical journey.

As Smith pledges to change and move beyond past mistakes, "I'm Gonna Change" unfolds in an orchestrally epic fashion, signalling that these lyrics are not empty promises but rather the foundation for a transformative journey.

This gripping release leaves listeners eagerly anticipating future chapters in Shannon Smith's evolving musical narrative.

The latest single from Shannon Smith, ‘I’m Gonna Change’, starts out with beats and a heartbroken guitar that are as arid as a desert. Following on from his debut single, ‘Dance The Night Away’, Smith’s sophomore release is one helluva a left turn. Having given us the hit of summer ’23, ‘I’m Gonna Change’, is the sound of a man fearing the loss of love and abasing himself with promises of reform in an attempt to stave off the inevitable.

I am tryin’ / I am dyin’ / In myself / When I’ve done wrong, sings Smith to himself and, ultimately, to his partner. This is raw stuff that will catch a lot of people off guard, but just because Smith has turned from party pleaser to hound dog of love, ‘I’m Gonna Change’ still works very nicely, thank you.

This song is steeped in a tradition of folk rock that only really exists in Western Australia but, when it breaks through, has the capacity to sit alongside the world’s best. Think Cruel Guards era The Panics, a touch of The Waifs when they were trying to make it in London, and you’ll get a bit of an aural picture, but better just to have a listen for yourself.

And, there’s something really neat Smith has done with his vocals on the line I’m gonna change, picking up the inflection of his partner in life and music, Fremantle/Walyalup Americana artist, Helen Townsend. Whether deliberate or not, the connection the delivery of that line makes between him and the woman he’s so desperately trying to win back is uncanny.

‘I’m Gonna Change’ is a surefooted shift in focus for Shannon Smith, one that really powers home in the final bars. I’m just not sure if I believe him. I guess future releases may tell the story.

It’s the giddy feeling that comes with newfound love - ‘Let’s go driving down the freeway/Feel the wind blow through our hair/Leave our worries all behind us/We can dance the night away’.

Spring is in the air and in his step and you can just feel the energy in the recording studio as the band vibes on the groove and the keyboards and horns flavour the song with soulful flourishes. Ain’t love grand? Sure sounds like it here.

Welcome

Music has been an extraordinary companion throughout my life, taking me on a remarkable journey filled with unforgettable experiences. It has been there for me in moments of joy, sadness, celebration, and reflection. It has been the soundtrack to my adventures, and it has connected me with people I would have never met otherwise.

Music is a universal language that transcends cultures, colours, and preferences, connecting people from all walks of life. It has the power to bring us together and ignite a sense of unity like nothing else.

As you navigate through my website, you may notice a symbol that holds great meaning to me: the “crotchet with wings”. It represents the freedom found in music—the freedom to express ideas, emotions, and experiences. The freedom to create connections with people, places and times.

Music has the remarkable ability to touch our souls, resonating deep within us. It has the power to inspire, uplift, heal, and ignite change. In essence, music weaves its way into the tapestry of our lives, connecting us to memories, friends, and a spectrum of emotions. It accompanies us on our journey, providing a soundtrack that amplifies the highs and consoles us during the lows.

Writing music has allowed me to be vulnerable, opening the door to understanding myself but also understanding and support from those who have shared or experienced similar journeys.  It has allowed me to grow emotionally and spiritually.

Through my debut album, I aim to share my own stories, emotions, and experiences with you. It is my hope that my music will resonate with you, evoke emotions, and create a connection that goes beyond words.
